It is also called as bacterial vaginosis(BV).it is a vaginal condition that leads from a overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina and can produce vaginal discharge. In earlier days, it was known as gardnerella vaginitis, after the bacteria that were thought to cause the condition. The new name bacteria vaginosis reflects the fact that excess numbers of bacteria live in the vagina area and cause discharge with a foul odor. The gardnerella bacterium is not the only culprit for vaginal discharge.
Any women showing the signs of Chlamydia and gonorrhoea should consult with doctor so that it avoids the chances of more serious infections like Chlamydia and gonorrhoea. The symptoms may resemble that of Trichomoniasis and yeast infections. Though this infection is not dangerous but it can cause irritable symptoms. It has been estimated that 1 among 3 women will experience this problem at some point in their life.
Around 29% of women in US have been suffering from bacterial vaginosis and 16% of pregnant women and 60% of sexually transmitted women are victim of same infection.
The treatment of bacterial vaginosis includes intake of antibiotics and they are:
- Metronidazole oral pill form or by metronidazole gel which can be used in vagina
- Vaginal clindamycin cream(Cleocin)
After treatment also, bacterial vaginosis can occur within 12 months. It is unclear why so many infections develop at recurrent rate. a second course of antibiotics can be given .metronidazole is an effective cure and also available is vaginal clindamycin cream. The gels might cause vaginitis (side effects).Tinidazole is an antibiotic that has less side effects than metronidazole.No special treatment is required if the signs disappear.
In case of pregnancy, this infection can lead to premature labor, premature birth of baby, and infection of the amniotic fluid and infection of the uterus after delivery of baby.
