Pituitary Gland Malfunctions

This gland is a pea shaped structure located inside a bony structure simply at the base of the brain. This sella turcica also protects the gland and allow very little time for expansion. This gland often allows flexibility and allows other endocrine glands to perform their duties effectively. This gland is often controlled by hypothalamus which is again a region located above the pituitary gland. Once the hormone level is detected the hypothalamus of the pituitary glands can decide on the level of secretion.

The main job of a pituitary gland involves two important parts called the anterior lobe and posterior lobe. The lobes are both connected to the hypothalamus and also contain blood vessels which cause nerve fibers. The job of the hypothalamus is to also control the level of hormone secretion to the blood vessels. The pituitary gland also undergoes a lot of malfunction issues. Mostly it results in developing tumor or adenoma. This tumor can then produces or overproduce hormones inside the pituitary cells causing enlargement of the pituitary glands.

In cases of over-production of hormones by the pituitary tumor, the gland undergoes a major change. Doctors can effectively check the malfunction of a pituitary gland. Firstly with the use of tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, the enlarged or shrunk pituitary gland can be observed. This scan can often lead to visibility of any kind of tumor in the gland. The doctor would then check for the levels of pituitary hormones in the body. A simple blood test is enough to measure the levels of hormones in the body.

However at times the levels are difficult to interpret and can vary depending on a person’s body and needs. The doctor would need a substance for hormone production that can check the level of hormones in the body. This procedure is complex but doctors sometimes measure the insulin level for a quick understanding of the growth hormone.
