Osteomyelitis – Causes, Symptoms

Osteomyelitis is a disorder related to bones and its structures. It is basically a chronic process of the bones and its structures which is secondary to infection with the pyogenic organisms. The Osteomyelitis generally affects long bones of the arms and legs for teenagers as it is a kind of bacteria which can affect the bones present in human body in different ways.

The infection of Osteomyelitis is often seen passing through the blood stream to the bone and is then seen eventually travelling to other parts of the body with the help of blood route. When it affects the bone very badly people feel tremendous pain and uneasy feeling. They cannot move very fast as the bones hurt. The approach to this Osteomyelitis depends completely on the path the bacteria have taken to reach the bone. There are basically two types of Osteomyelitis acute and chronic.

Patients suffering from Osteomyelitis must be treated immediately because otherwise there are chances that it might become chronic and can lead to a condition where the affected bone will not get enough blood for its supply. Many a times it can also lead to the death of the bone tissue.

There are antibiotics which can cure it but before its invention it was the major reason of crippler for children. Though this disease is very common among children it can be seen in people who are above 50 years of age. The bacteria which causes Osteomyelitis differs among age groups as in older people it affect their vertebrae and pelvis. One of the causes of this infection could be due to a surgical implant of metal inside a bone.

Some of the common causes of Osteomyelitis are:

  • Bone injury
  • Poor blood circulation of blood to the bone
  • Infection in the body which the blood carries to the bone
  • Fungal infection
  • Weak immune system

These are a few cause of this infection. Some symptoms of this infection could be:

  • Bone pain
  • Pus on skin
  • Fever, constant chill feeling
  • Fatigue
  • Uneasy
  • Constant sweating

These are a few symptoms of Osteomyelitis. Now, as stated earlier treatment for this disease can be given in the form of antibiotics, as it has the capacity to destroy the bacteria. Another treatment method would be bone grafting or surgery which can totally wash out the infection. Bone replacements are also quite common method of treating Osteomyelitis.
