People who are more likely to be affected are ones those who have high levels of cholesterol in their body. And patients who have gained nearly 2 to 3 kgs because of excess fat consumption. There are yet others who suffer infertility and other problems due to thyroid disease.
Family history or medical history also plays an important role in patients suffering from thyroids. Women often are more prone to thyroids than men and especially women in their reproductive age. In fact the menstrual cycle also creates problems during thyroids. Few women become sufferers during stages of pregnancy. Stress and other hormonal problems do cause thyroid problems in people.
Most of the thyroid symptoms vary from person to person. Some might notice symptoms like weight loss or weight gain. The patient will have dry hair which would look coarse throughout the day. The skin would be excessively dry while the patient might look tired, weak and fatigued. Other problems include cold intolerance, tremors, cramps, aches, depression, loss of weight, decreased or increased appetite, constipation, unbalanced bowel movements, decreased libido, cholesterol miscarriages, high cholesterol, memory loss, poor concentration levels, irritability, insomnia, infertility, family history etc.
Now the diet for thyroid is basically fruits high in calcium, iodine and fiber. Foods high in goitrogens also need to be made a note of as patients should basically avoid such foods. These foods would very well interfere with smooth functioning of the thyroid gland. Also foods like cabbage, cauliflower, mushrooms, broccoli, turnips and mustard needs to be avoided. Some other foods like peach, strawberries, peanuts, radish, tofu, spinach and millet needs to be avoided too. Patients with hypothyroidism should also avoid eating such vegetables that might create problems in breathing and swallowing.
Foods high in iodine which may include boosters, dairy foods, processed foods, and shellfish also can be avoided and needs to be avoided. However it is most important to realize the importance of diet and foods in the body. People might become very pro to certain foods but once in a while you can consume these foods. At times foods like carrot, amla which are high in calcium also needs to be consumed.
