About Biologic Response Modifiers

Biologic response modifiers are engineered medications that are made from living organisms such as proteins, genes or viruses. They are also used for treating a problem that is recurrent in humans. A type of biologic agents includes vaccines. Drugs are also used as synthesized chemicals.

There are many biological block triggers of inflammation. They are used for treating the forms of arthritis that are auto immune. These include the juvenile idiopathic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. A lot of errant attacks are caused by inflammation on the tissues of the body. This causes a lot of destruction and joint pain. Some other systemic effects such as heart and lung damage and fatigue are also caused. The rheumatoid arthritis is approved by some biologics.

The usage of some biologics is done after the failure of the response of a patient to the anti-rheumatic drugs and traditional disease-modifying drugs. When the patients are given biologic drugs for treatment, they are used in combination with DMARD such as methotrexate for greater effectiveness.

Biologic response modifiers do not cure rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. However, luckily they work for 2/3rd of the population suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. A remission is induced in the people who give a favorable response. After the chances of remission and diagnosis are increased, the condition can be treated with biologic response modifiers.

The DMARDS and biologics cannot be taken together. The disease activity and inflammation is reduced to a great extent. The immune system’s activity is also impaired. However, if there is a lot of suppression of immune system, it can take hold of an overwhelming infection. Studies are suggesting that if two biologics are taken at the same time, a lot of infection can be caused and the therapeutic benefits can increase.
